Ballou students do more than sightseeing on trips abroad

What a tremendous good news story: Students at D.C.'s Ballou High School Embark on Epic Overseas Adventure

WAMU's Kavitha Cardoza digs deep in the personal stories of the Ballou students who've been abroad even though some of them have not been across the District, even to the National Mall. An excerpt:

Odem says they did a lot of sightseeing. "In London, we went to Buckingham Palace, we went to the original Hard Rock Café. In Paris, we saw the Eiffel Tower, I really enjoyed the Palace of Versailles," she says.

But not every experience was fun. Odem once got on a train not realizing her group wasn't coming with her. "I was scared for my life. There are a lot of stores about people getting snatched in Paris and sold I thought I was lost forever!"

Luckily someone on the train spoke English and helped her out. Odem says she would never have asked for help in D.C. "I would never have asked for help on the Metro here even if I didn't know where I was going. [S]omething about American people that we always keep our guard up. 'Cause I don’t want to be cursed out or have someone angry at me for having asked a question," she says.

Odem says she would not usually help anyone else, but that was before the trip. "And if someone was to ask me today on the Metro I would help them happily. I think I would even walk them to where they needed to go! 'Cause that was one of the worst experiences of my life. Being lost," she says.

Must-read blog post: An incredible 13 years of DC SCORES at Arts and Technology Academy, led by four great leaders

An incredible 13 years of DC SCORES at Arts and Technology Academy, led by four great leaders tells the story of an amazing partnership for children.  The post describes the partnership, the kids, the adults, the school, and the impact on the community.  One key takeaway:
In the ideal DC SCORES program, we're not just building teams for youth through the combination of soccer, poetry and service-learning -- we're providing the resources for teachers and administrators within the school to also come closer together and ultimately create a tighter-knit school and surrounding community.

That's exactly what happened at ATA.

And another:

The games take place in front of throngs of family members, who cheer on the kids playing on the field adjacent to the school building. During the afternoon, teachers and administrators, their work done for the day, venture over to watch. Everyone knows that Thursday afternoons are Game Day.

Program alumni come to the games, too. Some high school students are now volunteer referees for DC SCORES; others visit the coaches to thank them for the opportunities they provided the students and to give updates on school.

UDC's got science, technology and 4-H this summer!

The University of the District of Columbia is home to two summer camps:

  • Summer Bridge Program in Science and Technology (June 30 - July 25):These days, it is practically impossible to secure a reliable job without a college degree. Help students gain the edge in STEM education. This July, CAUSES is again offering a Summer Bridge course in Environmental and Sustainability Sciences and Technologies, sponsored by the National Science Foundation. This course is designed to provide high school and incoming college students with the essential skills necessary to succeed in college studies and beyond.

Students will participate in water quality analysis, field studies, field trips and a capstone project. Through this hands-on, interactive course, students will gain a fundamental knowledge of environmental computing, sustainability, water quality, climate change, data analysis, advanced computing and mobile technologies for learning using the latest technology (iPads, computer, hydroponic system and soil, water and air quality monitoring sensors).

The program will be offered on UDC's Van Ness campus. Applications are due by June 20. Contact Dr. Tolessa Deksissa via email, tdeksissa@udc.edu for more information.

  • 4-H Summer Camp (July 14 - August 1): It's almost that time of the year! School is ending and DC's children will need some way to spend the summer. Thankfully, the Center for 4-H and Youth Development will be offering 4-H Summer Camp. Geared for DC residents between the ages of 9 and 14, the camp is being offered for only $25 per week!

Students will participate in a variety of activities from photography to golfing, but will still receive lessons in healthy living and STEM. The camp will also include field trips to the Kennedy Center, local museums, Muirkirk Farm and more!

The camp will be open from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Mondays through Friday and will be offered July 14 - August 1 at the Riverside Center in Northeast, DC. Interested? Register here or contact Jaime Brown via email, jsbrown@udc.edu before May 31.

Remember, One City Youth has a list of camps.
